How to Apply Gyeon Q²M Wetcoat (Best Durability and Finish)

Gyeon Q²M Wetcoat is a spray and rinse sealant that leaves an SiO2-based coating on a car’s exterior that’s super hydrophobic. In this article, I’ll be explaining how to apply the product to get the best durability and finish. So let’s get started.

The Quick Answer

There are a few different ways that Gyeon Q²M Wetcoat can be applied to a car’s exterior, but from my experience the following methods produces the best results.

  1. Wash the car and rinse.
  2. Fill a clean bucket with water.
  3. Dip a clean microfiber wash mitt into the bucket and spray Gyeon Q²M Wetcoat onto the mitt or panel 2-3 times.
  4. Spread Wetcoat across the panel in straight lines ensuring even coverage.
  5. Immediately rinse the panel using a pressure washer or high-pressure hose.
  6. Dry the car as normal.

It’s that straightforward! Usually it takes me around 5 minutes to go over an entire car using this method and it ensures really even coverage and a streak-free finish.

Two Methods of Application

There are two common ways that people use to apply this product.

  • Spread the product on the wet panel using a microfiber mitt and immediately rinse off (the method I use).
  • Spray onto the wet panel and immediately rinse off (the method the instructions state).

It says on the instructions that there is no need to spread the product around the panel. This is definitely true, and you will get a good hydrophobic coating if you just spray the product directly onto the panel and rinse it off immediately with high-pressure.

However, I’ve found that using a wash mitt to spread the product has the following advantages.

  • More even coverage.
  • Increased control when applying the product to certain areas.
  • No issues with streaking or spotting left after the car has been dried.
  • Better durability.

Rules to Remember

The product is pretty easy to apply and you’ll get a great finish as well as a very hydrophobic coating that can last several months. However, there are quite a few mistakes that car owners make when applying Gyeon Q²M Wetcoat that can cause several issues.

Here are some of the most important rules to remember during the application process to get the best results.

Never Apply in the Heat or Direct Sunlight

If this product is allowed to dwell on the panel for even a minute, you may be left with spots and streaks where the product has dried. This is a big risk in direct sunlight or hot conditions. So only ever apply the product when the panels are cool to the touch.

Rinse Immediately

This again relates to the issues when the product dries. Because the product is so concentrated, it can cause spots and streaking very quickly. So make sure you rinse the panel immediately after application. The product bonds to the paintwork instantly, so there’s no need to let it dwell.

Apply to One Panel at a Time

You’ll see a theme here. Most of the issues caused by this product are caused by letting it sit on the paint. Always apply to a small section or panel and then rinse straightaway. Do not apply the product to the entire car and then rinse it all off afterwards or you’ll be left with ugly spots and streaks.

Make Sure the Panel is Wet

Because the product is so concentrated, it sticks to the paint very quickly and strongly, which is a huge problem if applied to a dry panel. Make sure whenever you apply the product, either by spraying or my spreading with a wash mitt, make sure the panel is wet first.

Use Sparingly

A lot of people make the mistake of applying too much Gyeon Q²M Wetcoat. The product is very concentrated, so a little goes a long way. 2-3 sprays is more than enough to apply to half of a hood of a normal size car, or a door panel. Less is more, so only use 2-3 sprays per panel. It’s not only wasteful to apply more, but it can cause spotting and streaking issues.

Prep or No Prep?

So how should you prepare the surface before applying Gyeon Q²M Wetcoat? It really depends how you’re using the product.

If you are using the product on top of another wax, sealant or ceramic coating, then you don’t need to do anything to prepare the surface except washing the car thoroughly and rinsing.

If you are using Gyeon Q²M Wetcoat on its own as a last stage protection (LSP) product, then you may want to prepare the panels to get better durability out of the product. Here’s how.

  • Wash the car.
  • Remove any old waxes and sealants using a wax-stripping shampoo.
  • Decontaminate if necessary using tar and iron fallout removers.
  • Rinse the car again.

You don’t need to go to this much of an extreme and clay the entire car before applying the product. One of the best things about Wetcoat is how quickly it can be applied and how little you need to get a couple of months durability.

However, if you really want maximum durability, then having a prepped surface will help.

The main thing you need to remember about the prep, is just to have a clean and wet surface to apply the product to.
